FAMILY LIFE

I was raised on a small dairy farm in Welch as one of ten children. I then moved to Red Wing, graduating from Red Wing Central High. I was lucky enough to marry my high school sweetheart, Mary. Together we have been blessed with five beautiful children, a son-in-law (soon two) and two grandchildren. We currently reside Hay Creek Township on a farm where we always find a new project to start. When I am not in the office or out in the community, you can find me on our farm spending time with my children and grandchildren. Laughter is the greatest medicine, family and friends definitely give me that.

CAREER

I was a police officer with the Red Wing Police Department for 30 years. While there, I served in a variety of assignments that provided me with valuable experience and knowledge. Assignments include; school resource officer, investigator, field training officer and supervisor, bike patrol officer and supervisor, member of the Goodhue County SWAT Team, crisis negotiator, first aid instructor and 10 years as a supervisor with the patrol division. I was also a medical examiner investigator for Goodhue and Dakota Counties from 2005 until 2013. During this time, I investigated deaths in both counties, worked closely with the Goodhue and Dakota County Sheriff’s Departments and built relationships with neighboring agencies. I am also currently on many committees and boards; MN Violent Crimes Enforcement Team, RCTC Law Enforcement Board, Towards Zero Death Steering Committee MN State College System- Criminal Justice Advisory Board, and the SEMN Emergency Communications Board. I have had the honor of serving as your sheriff since January 2019, I hope I have the opportunity to add four more to that.

EDUCATION

I have a bachelor’s degree in Criminal Justice and a minor in Psychology from Mankato State University in 1988. I have also graduated from the Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension - Leadership in Police Organizations as well as the Chiefs of Police Leadership Academy.
